Mount Gay Distilleries Ltd.
Mount Gay Rum is one of the world’s finest and oldest rums and was being produced in Barbados from as early as 1703. This new Bds$18M Facility is located adjacent to the original Refinery and allows the company to improve efficiency by centralising the ageing and blending operations which were previously split over various sites.
The new facility, officially opened in 2007 by the Prime Minister of Barbados the Right Honourable Owen Arthur, comprises five warehouses, a large rainwater catchment pond for fire fighting, stainless steel tanks for the storage of alcohol and provision for future expansion. Four warehouses are used for the ageing of single and double distilled alcohol in oak barrels, with a total storage capacity of over 64,000 barrels. The fifth warehouse contains a state of the art blending operation with stainless steel mixing tanks, the barrel filling/discharging operation, a coopers shop for the repairs of barrels, the master blender’s laboratory, a sample archive, staff facilities and ancillary offices. The site layout allows for 4 additional ageing warehouses, one of which was added in 2013.
The design involved extensive process planning and a thorough understanding of the production operations. This was achieved through a detailed briefing process and extensive discussions with the departmental heads to understand the project’s specific requirements.
Other projects for this client include; the conversion of existing buildings at their Brandon’s complex into a bottling plant for “Ponche Kuba” with raw material storage; the refurbishment and extension of their existing headquarter offices; and a feasibility study to relocate the entire operation to this site.
