Carters General Store
With history dating back to the 1880's, Carter's General Stores is a family-owned company that has developed into one of the leading lumber, hardware and home-ware retailers in Barbados, with 5 stores across the island. Their Lower Estate facility currently consists primarily of lumber and steel warehousing with a retail store focused on building contractors. In 2011 we completed the refurbishment of this store, which used to be an old barn, within a tight 3 month window.
The majority of the work involved the replacement of the old timber roof with new steel trusses and the redecoration of the interiors. The roof structure was designed and pre-fabricated prior to the start of the works to reduce the build time and by extension the time the store would be closed. With the replacement of the roof, we took the opportunity to install double glazed Sun Optics Skylights that now provide approximately 95% of the stores lighting requirements during the day and insulation to reduce the solar heat gain. A new efficient air-conditioning system with fabric ducts in our client’s corporate colours was installed to cool the space. Bespoke manager’s stations and check-out counters were designed to enhance the main entrance and a ramp added to improve access for the disabled.
